Earnings announcement premium

MomentumAdvanced

The earnings announcement premium is the tendency for stocks to earn extra return around scheduled earnings dates, as distinct from the drift that continues for weeks after the surprise. A rules-based version holds a stock into its announcement window and steps aside afterward, or concentrates a book in names that are about to report. It is an event calendar, not a surprise score.

Not investment advice. Nothing here is a recommendation to buy or sell anything. Backtests and historical studies are not guarantees, and a rule that worked in one sample can fail in the next. Trading can lose money. Links are for education, not endorsements. Do your own research.

Rules
Use a point-in-time earnings calendar. Enter a long a set number of days before the scheduled report and exit a set number of days after, or hold only through the announcement session. Size down into names with wide expected gaps. Do not use the actual surprise, which is not known at entry, unless the strategy is the separate post-earnings drift rule.
Where AI fits
AI can join a survivorship-safe calendar to prices and can keep this window test separate from a post-announcement drift test. It should drop unverified or restated dates. A model that 'knows' the earnings outcome from a later article cannot be in the entry rule.
Markets
Individual stocks with a reliable earnings calendar. Options around the event are a different strategy.
Timeframes
Days around the announcement. The calendar is quarterly.
Risks
The premium can be an insurance payment for gap risk. One missed date or a halted name dominates a short window. Transaction costs are large relative to a few days of drift. Using the printed surprise turns this into a different, after-the-fact strategy.
